General X-Ray Information

What is an X-Ray?

X-Rays use small amounts of radiation to produce images.  You may be asked to stand, sit, or lay down during your X-Ray depending on the area of your body that needs to be imaged.

X-Ray Patient Preparation

Most X-Rays do not require any special preparation.

You will need to remove any clothing or jewellery that may interfere with the X-Ray, and you may be asked to wear a gown during your X-Ray.  The radiographer will position you between the X-Ray machine and the imaging plate.  Depending on the test you are having, the radiographer may cover body parts that are not being imaged with a lead shield to avoid any unecessary radiation exposure.  It is important to keep very still and follow any instructions the radiographer may give you.  You may be asked to hold your breath during the X-Ray.

It is important to remember to bring your referral letter from your doctor, and any previous images or X-Rays that you may have had of the area being examined.
