BMD Information

What is a B.M.D (Bone Mineral Densitometry)?

Bone Mineral Densitometry measures the patients bone loss due to osteoporosis.  Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass which may lead to fragile bones and increased risk of bone fractures.  B.M.D scans can help to determine the risk of fractures due to osteoporosis and determine the need for medical treatment.

The most common way to measure bone mineral density is to use a DEXA scanner.  (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry).  Usually two or more regions are scanned including the lumbar spine and a hip.  The patient will be asked to remove all clothing and jewellery that may affect the B.M.D scan, and often will be placed in a gown.

Your height and weight will be taken, and a detailed questionnaire completed prior to having your BMD study.

B.M.D Patient Preparation

There are no special dietary requirement prior to having a B.M.D.  If you have had a nuclear medicine scan involving the injection of a radio tracer, it is recommended that you delay your B.M.D for 48 hours after having a nuclear medicine scan.
